It's been 7 years and a week since i last surfed with my Dad.
This morning i caught a few waves in his honor at the office...
Thanks Dad for teaching me to surf and love the ocean life!!!

For All The Surfers That Love the Ocean
In Loving Memory of Gary Koerner (1949-1998)
by Loretta Martinez Williams

They study the waves; they study the tides,
All for the perfect curl, all for the perfect ride.
They don wet suits in weather that is too cold,
They withstand extreme degrees of heat;
They are searchers of the soul.
And then they bear offspring, whom they teach to ride,
And it is pleasant to see, surfing side by side.
But these young men do grow old,
And some are taken before their toll.
So it is befitting that their ashes return to the ocean,
As all that remains is their soul.
Their friends are given one last chance to say goodbye,
While they paddle out, afloat in low tide.
One soul surfer who has touched so many lives is now gone,
But his love of the surf inspires others to carry on.
While his soul surfers distribute his ashes to the ocean in a last hurl,
Our thoughts go back to him riding the eternal curl.

Hang'n in Cabo

Hang'n in Cabo pt. 2

Dad at a special point in mainland Mex

The first time he took me surfing!

Dingo Dawg,

Sweet post. Aloha to your Pops. You just know he is scoring better waves than you are right now

Coming from someone who learned on his own, I can only wish my Pops would have pushed me into waves. . .

Dawg!
You are lucky to have experienced and surfed different countries with your pops! That is sooo cool!

Like sea said..."wish my pops had pushed me into some waves when i was young!
I had to do it on my own....

My pops doesnt much care for "the beach".
He burns to a crisp in 35...45 minutes!..."damn, someone open a window...."

Props to your Pops, Dingo!

Peace!

I hope my Scotty will grow up enough to pay as nice of a tribute to me. Very touching Ryan, and if you think it was good for you I cannot explain how good it is to all of us Dad's seeing you kids ride for the first time. Experiencing your first tube is better than our first tube. This is a very tuff explanation for words but those of us, including your dad feel a lifetime of satisfaction that comes from sharing with the ones we love the one thing we so love.

Nice post brah. Your dad looks like he was a cool guy. It looks like he was a big influence on you. Sorry he's not still here with/for you.

You have inspired me to think about my own dad though. I owe my dad a ton for raising me where he did, for taking me surfing, bodysurfing windkooking, diving, canoe paddling, kayaking etc. For all the time spent in the water we spent just as much climbing waterfalls, hunting pigs and goats, rambling backcountry in the Haleakala Crater, etc. etc. I was given a truly Hawaiian style youth and my dad was there "pushing me into waves" every step of the way.

Thanks for posting that cuzzen. Oh and I love the old school photos. Nice hair!

bUDDaKine - you should see some photos of the ol' mullet i used to rock!

Glad to share a lil' stoke with everyone... I really do miss having someone to go to for advise about "blah and blah" and i would really love to have him come visit me for a surf out here in SD - sometimes he does when i am asleep! It really pisses me off when i hear someone whinning about their parent did this or is such a jerk casue of this... all i wanna do sometimes is strangle them and say "shut the fugg up and go hug them - while you still can"...

Dingo,

I wish i had the opportunity to surf with your dad or even meet him. That's a rad poem you wrote. Thanks for basically being with me on the trips to Zihuat or just surfing trips in general. All the tips you have given me, advice, journeys, what to do, what not to do. All your help has been passed down from your father to a little homey like me and I appreciate every bit of it.

I wish I could've been out there today surfing some waves with you guys. Trust me, I always think about your situation and I think you are being so strong about the situation and basically are so stoked about the memories you've had with him. I was always really interested in listening to what you have to say about life and about surfing. I'm sure your knowledge came from your pops and I guess I can say that I met him through the good times with you and advice you gave me.

You da man and your one of the best rippers to come out of the Lone Star State. And that's not an opinion, that's a fact.

1 luv,
Ling
