Salt Lake Avalanche Advisory
Thursday, February 4, 2010
Created at 7:08 am

Forecaster: Brett Kobernik

A weak storm moved through early this morning producing a trace to a few inches of new snow. Temperatures are in the teens along the higher terrain and in the 20s along the lower elevations. Winds are from a westerly direction only gusting into the 20s along the highest terrain. There is some notable wind at the mid and lower elevations with moderate gusts. Riding conditions remain mostly excellent on many slopes. After skiing a low angled slope yesterday, one of my partners yesterday noted it's kind of like longboard surfing. In essence, it's not as exciting as dropping into a double overhead wave but it sure is still a lot of fun.

I've been watching the lines that hikers are making near the slide. They are now taking the the less steep run down the hill and the steep part that usually has many lines through it now has nothing but a fresh white blanket untouched by skis or snowboards.

Hikers are all over it now. Danger must be less at the moment.

LOL, yikes I think danger levels have dropped but haven't watched for the last couple days.
I remember last year at Snowbird when that one steep slope was avi contrled, all tracked up, then that girl dropped in on a board, the sloope slid and she was lost....
Gotta give serious respect. The snow feels no remorse....

An overall MODERATE danger exists in the Wasatch. Pockets of CONSIDERABLE danger dot the landscape on the steeper northwest through north through northeast facing slopes at the mid and upper elevations. Clearly, it’s still possible to trigger dangerous and persistent deep hard slabs 2-4’ deep. Death or serious injury is likely.
Ogden area mountains:
A TRICKY MODERATE danger exists as well at the mid and low elevations with the lingering surface hoar from late January. Collapsing and high energy stability tests offer enough clues to the instability.

Yeh, I'd want to be pretty careful.
